Starlight is rooted in a family story of service, resilience, and the belief that a clear sense of purpose helps us find our way.
Where Our Name Began
Built by hand.
Guided by heart.
In the mid-1930s, Jeff’s grandfather, Adam Joseph, founded Star Light Baptist Church in rural Plaissance, Louisiana. He served as its pastor for more than 50 years.
During the Jim Crow era and the civil rights movement, the church offered a spiritual refuge and a guiding light of hope. That commitment to service and a strong moral compass shaped generations of the Joseph family.
Jeff’s father, James, became a civil rights leader, corporate executive, and pioneer in corporate philanthropy and social responsibility. As U.S. ambassador to South Africa, he was the first U.S. ambassador to present his credentials to President Nelson Mandela. Jeff’s uncle John became an educator, community leader, and the first African American mayor of Opelousas, Louisiana—the town where the Joseph family once lived under the yoke of Jim Crow.
